Your First Physiotherapy Visit: What to Expect

If you are booking physiotherapy for the first time, you may be unsure what to bring or how to explain the problem. Starting with the activities that matter to you can make the conversation clearer: walking to work, reaching a shelf or returning to a favourite sport.

Physiotherapy focuses on movement and function and can involve education, exercises and other physical approaches, depending on the concern. Healthdirect explains the role of physiotherapy and the range of problems physiotherapists work with.

Explain what has changed

Before the appointment, make a short note of when the problem began, which activities are difficult and what you have already tried. Include any relevant injury, surgery or health condition. You do not need to use medical terms or arrive with your own diagnosis.

It can help to choose one example from a normal day. “I can sit comfortably for a short meeting but struggle on the drive home” is more specific than simply saying an activity hurts.

Ask what the assessment involves

Tell the practitioner what you would like help with and ask how they propose to assess it. If a movement, examination or explanation is unclear, ask them to pause and talk it through. Mention any concerns about comfort, clothing, communication or access before the visit where possible.

You can ask whether there is anything useful to bring, such as existing reports, a medicines list, the shoes you normally wear or a referral if you have one.

Discuss your options and goals

Treatment can take different forms and is not identical for every person. Ask why a particular approach is suggested and what role it will play in your overall plan. Healthdirect’s overview describes several approaches a physiotherapist may use.

Useful questions include:

  • What are we aiming to improve first?
  • What should I do between appointments?
  • Can you show me the activity and check that I understand it?
  • What symptoms or changes should prompt me to contact you?
  • When should we review the plan?

Check the practical arrangements

Ask about fees, appointment length and any referral or funding requirements before attending. Coverage depends on your circumstances; a booking should not be taken as confirmation of a rebate.

Read about our physiotherapy service and contact the clinic to discuss availability. Bring your main question with you, even if it is simply, “Where should I start?”
