You do not need to find perfect words before asking for support. A simple starting point might be: “I have not been feeling like myself” or “I am finding things harder to manage lately”. The first conversation can focus on what you have noticed and what you need help with.
Choose a time and person that feel manageable. If speaking is difficult, writing a few notes or asking someone you trust to help arrange an appointment may make the first step easier.
Start with your experience
Try describing everyday changes rather than deciding on a diagnosis yourself. You could talk about how you are sleeping, concentrating, feeling or coping with work and relationships. Mention how long it has been happening and what concerns you most.
A GP is often a useful starting point for discussing mental health and exploring suitable care. Beyond Blue explains how to find a mental health professional and the different types of support available.
Understand the support you are considering
Counselling provides a space to talk through difficulties with a qualified professional and explore ways of responding to them. Some concerns may be better addressed with a psychologist, a doctor or a combination of support. You can ask what a clinician works with and whether their approach suits your needs. Healthdirect’s counselling guide explains what sessions may involve.
Prepare a few questions
- What would a first appointment involve?
- What information should I bring?
- How do confidentiality and its limits work?
- What are the fees and any referral requirements?
- How will we decide whether the support is helping?
It is reasonable to ask for an explanation in everyday language. You can also tell the practitioner if a suggestion feels difficult to fit into your life. That gives you something specific to discuss together.
Know where to turn between appointments
